We’re getting multiple reports this week that MSHA is conducting aggressive, full‑scope inspections across Vermont, including paperwork audits, equipment walk‑arounds, and spot checks on training documentation. These are not courtesy visits. Inspectors are arriving unannounced and taking a hard look at:
- Training records (new miner, annual refresher, task training)
- Equipment condition (guards, backup alarms, Frame condition, fire suppression, brakes, lights)
- Workplace exams, Pre‑shift inspections and documentation
- Contractor ID and site‑specific hazard training
- Dust, noise, and silica controls
- Lockout/Tagout procedures
- Seat belt use and haul‑road compliance
If you operate a quarry, borrow pit, crushing operation, contract or perform work on a mine site even temporarily you are in MSHA’s enforcement window right now.
What you should do today
- Verify all training records are current and accessible
- Ensure equipment is inspected and documented daily
- Correct any guarding or maintenance issues immediately
- Review site‑specific hazard training with your crews
- Confirm supervisors know how to interact with inspectors
- Make sure your competent person is on site and engaged
Why this matters
MSHA’s current posture is strict. We’re seeing citations issued for issues that would normally result in warnings. Paperwork gaps are being treated the same as physical hazards.
