Drill Operator
The Drill Operator safely performs all construction and/or quarry drilling activity in accordance with the job program to achieve anticipated production. Working from a set of plans or blueprints, the driller is responsible for the proper pattern layout and ensures that the correct hole site is being drilled.

  • Follows Safety Policies, Procedures and Practices.
  • Performs daily maintenance activities required for safe, efficient operation of assigned equipment.
  • Understands different drill patterns and terminology then executes drill pattern layout as established by the Blaster Foreman.
  • Maximizes the use of all drill supplies.
  • Monitors inventory accessories.
  • Communicates problems and terrain conditions to the Blasting Supervisor.
  • Accurately completes and submits timely drill reports, hole sheets and signed timecards.
  • Attends the Foreman’s work/site meetings as well as the daily heads-up safety meetings.
  • Walk around and/or conduct pre-trip inspections, check hoses, cables, chains, tracks and the general condition of the machine.
  • Check all drill fluid levels including engine oil, hydraulic oil, rock oil, compressor oil, anti-freeze, and fuel.
  • Ensure the proper warm-up procedures are being executed (per Maine Drilling & Blasting guidelines).
  • Periodically checks with Blaster Supervisor to verify site conditions and drilling plan.
  • Check area to be drilled for any hazards, including overhead electrical wires, underground utilities, and unsafe ground conditions, such as slopes or icy areas.
  • Communicate with the Blaster-in-charge regarding the conditions of the drilling, condition of the rock, wet holes, voids, mud seams, the pattern and drill bit size and other related project conditions.
  • Ensure tracks are clean and maintenance issues have been reported prior to securing the drill and leaving the jobsite.
  • Exercise extreme caution and observe all safety rules and regulations ensuring holes should be drilled to the proper depths, including subdrill.

Work environment:
  • There is no standard work week, hours may vary because some jobs must continue non-stop until completion.
  • Overtime work may be required as dictated by assigned project work and anticipated completion date.
  • Primary work is outdoors in varying degrees of weather elements, both cold and hot temperatures dependent on the seasons of the year and job locations.
  • Work closely with other crew members to coordinate responsibilities and communicate progress.
Physical demands:
  • Prolonged periods of standing and walking, reaching, and lifting, pushing, and pulling.
  • Stooping and bending 30 – 40 percent of the time.
  • Must be able to lift 50 – 75 pounds, 30 – 40 percent of the time.
  • Manual dexterity as needed to operate a variety of machinery and equipment.
  • High degree of physical agility.
  • Work on uneven and loose surfaces in varying weather conditions.
  • Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and tolerate exposure to excess noise under strenuous working conditions.
  • Regional travel to worksites expected.
Required education and experience:
  • Must have hydraulic equipment operating experience.
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Valid driver’s license with clean driving record.
  • Must have own transportation, including access to a truck as needed.
  • Must have personal cell phone for communications.
  • Possess appropriate tools and toolbox.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience in the construction industry, preferably as a construction laborer.
  • Must successfully complete a background check for ATF as well as pre-employment physical exam and drug screening.
  • Successful completion of Driller I and Driller II certifications.
Preferred education and experience:
  • Two (2) plus years of construction, quarry, mining work experience.
  • MSHA certified.
