Norwich University Bicentennial Stairs

Northfield, VT

One of the most significant landmarks on the Norwich University campus is also among its most humble: a simple set of granite steps at the northeast corner of the Upper Parade ground. But this is no ordinary staircase. These are the Centennial Stairs, built in 1919 to honor 40 individuals that helped define Norwich University during its first 100 years. For nearly a century the stairs have served as a daily reminder of Norwich’s mission “to make moral, patriotic, effective, useful citizens.”

Municipal Deconstruction, Renovation, Innovation, New Construction

West Dover WWTP

Dover, VT

The West Dover Wastewater Treatment Project was constructed over 18 months.  Unforeseen groundwater caused significant delay in lining the clearwater holding pond.  Another component, as bid, contemplated construction of two clarifiers over the contract time.  As a result of the delays in completing the holding pond, an alternate plan would be required.  Kingsbury was notified that one of the new clarifiers needed to be completed and the second converted to a temporary storage tank within three weeks to maintain treatment standards during winter peak flows.  Subsequently a monumental effort would be undertaken to meet new requirements.

The Stowe Electric Department

Headquarters and Garage

Stowe, VT

Stowe Electric contracted with Bread Loaf Construction to plan, design and build their new facility.  The lot was narrow with a River adjacent, in the village, and a 200-year-old sawmill. The buildings have energy efficient design and construction – the office building air source heat pumps, closed cell spray foam insulation, air sealing, and construction monitoring by an envelope consultant result in a very tight and robust envelope and low energy usage.  The garage is heated with space heaters, but its SIPs panel envelope creates a tight enclosure, notwithstanding 6 overhead doors.  The roof is structured for PV panels.

Montpelier Union Elementary School Playground

Montpelier, VT

ECI contracted for improvements at Union Elementary School in Montpelier.  This was much more than just a playground for the students.  Contaminated soil was removed, while there was site, drainage, stormwater treatment, landscaping and playground improvements. This school is in an urban setting where several students, faculty, and staff commute walking or bicycling.  The project was partly financed with fundraising initiatives.  This project benefits the sense of community with a modernized playground, removing potential exposures to the contamination, and improves access to the school.

Building New Construction, Academia

The University of Vermont STEM Complex

Burlington, VT

This four-year project involved demolition of two buildings and constructing new buildings of 185,000-square-feet, over three phases. The project had an extremely tight footprint with high volumes of pedestrian and vehicular traffic.  PC’s team was challenged with managing site safety and security, minimizing impacts to pedestrian and vehicular traffic, while separating PC’s construction activity from campus.
